Domaine de Baccari Premièr de Baccari Rouge 2015, Meknes, Morocco

Domaine de Baccari

Dry red wine, 75cl. Full bodied Cabernet Franc and Syrah blend from Meknes, Morocco. 14.5% ABV.

The elegance of the Cabernet Franc elevated by Syrah. Complex, long on the palate, with flavours of blackcurrant, spices and violet refreshed by a mineral hint. Rich and supple tannins. Great ageing potential.

Tasting notes from the judges of the Sommelier Wine Awards 2019

‘A rich, brambly, warm nose, with some cream and jam, too,’ began team leader Hamish Anderson, who described this as having ‘a rich style, under which lies brooding iron, meat and spice notes – a full and sweet wine with earthiness, and some grip on the finish’.

Producer Profile Domaine de Baccari

Hailing from the region of Meknes, the heart of Morocco’s winegrowing region since before the Roman Empire, Domaine de Baccari is nestled on the foothills of the Atlas mountain range at an altitude of 650m. Their terrain is made up of fine, red clay and soft limestone undersoil, which combined with a sunny and slightly cooler climate, make it ideal for growing wine with a strong identity. The domaine produces red and rosé wines from Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc, in particular, has thrived in the region, forming the backbone of Baccari’s balanced, delicate, fresh and complex wines. The estate has been owned by the same family for generations. They have been collaborating with renown oenologist, Stephane Derenoncourt and his team, since the 2013 vintage.

We discovered this wine whilst on vacation a January at Le Palais Paysan just south of Marrakech. We were wowed by how smooth it is, and to then discover that it was available to buy in UK was a delight.
We were drinking the 2019 vintage in Marrakech, and I’d say it’s smoother and richer than the 2015 vintage, so I hope that 9 Elms Wines continue to sell this wine in years to come.
