Dry red wine, 75cl. Full bodied 50% Sangiovese (Capannelle) and 50% Merlot (Avignonesi) blend from Tuscany, Italy. 13.5% ABV. 

Deep, dark ruby colour. Elegant and refined, with fresh notes of red and black berries, followed by sweet spices and an underlying, balsamic touch. On the palate: full-bodied and silky soft, with an elegant, fruity core and a long lingering, pleasantly dry finish. Great ageing potential. 
Inspired by the exceptional harvest of 1988 in Tuscany, Raffaele Rossetti then-owner of Capannelle, had the innovative idea of blending Sangiovese from Capannelle with a Tuscan Merlot, Avignonesi di Montepulciano. 50&50 was born – a blend of 50% Sangiovese from Capannelle and 50% Merlot from Avignonesi.

"First vintage, 1988. A joint venture with Avignonesi (who provide the 50% Merlot) and Capannelle (50% Sangiovese.) Super-inviting aromas of dried fruits (but not at all raisined), and a savoury/sweet complexity. Chewy but ripe on the palate. Really hard to describe but much more Sangiovese than Merlot, and with the Italianate tangy bite that is so Tuscany. Spicy long finish, almost spicy in texture (grainy). Delicious and distinctive." 16.5/20 Points

Producer Profile Capannelle

Wine producers of the highest quality located in Gaiole in Chianti, Siena, the Capannelle estate extends over 20 hectares (16 hectares of vines) and produces approximately 80.000 bottles of wine a year. The history of Capannelle wine production dates back to 1974, when Raffaele Rossetti, a Roman businessman, purchased the 16th century farmhouse. Extensive renovations and restoration have resulted in a unique luxury property producing exceptional wines. Today, it is owned by James B. Sherwood, founder and shareholder of the Orient Express Hotels.
